In a compelling revelation at the 5th Annual Conference of the National Council on Mining and Mineral Resources Development (NCMMRD), Mr. Ola Olukoyede, the Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), underscored the perilous impact of illegal mining on the nation's economic growth and development.
Speaking passionately in Ilorin on January 17, 2024, Olukoyede emphasized that unauthorized mining poses a significant threat, labeling it not only as an economic leakage but also as a danger to both local and national well-being. The Ilorin Zonal Commander of the EFCC, ACE1 Michael Nzekwe, echoed these sentiments, lamenting the rampant plundering of resources in Kwara State by artisanal miners. Nzekwe stressed that redirecting these resources through proper channels could sustain the state's economy and foster self-reliance.
Commending Kwara State Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrasaq for his anti-corruption and anti-illegal mining stance, Olukoyede urged all stakeholders to join forces in combating criminal activities associated with illegal mining. He issued a stern warning, asserting that the EFCC would not treat economic saboteurs lightly.
In his keynote address, Governor Abdulrasaq revealed strategic measures, including the registration of five Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs), aimed at acquiring viable mining sites to position the state as a major producer of solid minerals in Nigeria. He highlighted the abundance of mineral resources across the state's 16 local government areas, emphasizing the commercial potential for investors.
Abdulqowiyu Olododo, Kwara State’s Commissioner for Solid Mineral Development, affirmed the state government's collaboration with security agencies to safeguard investors within its borders. He reassured that a robust framework was in place to facilitate state works while adhering to the Federal Mining Act.
